WHEN & WHERE: Sunday, May 31 from 1 - 4 pm
Camp Tweedale
500 Bethel Road, Oxford (next to the Octorara Reservoir)
WHO:
-- 19 girls, ranging in age from 8 to 18, are slated to sing, dance or
play a musical instrument
-- 3 winners will be named as semi-finalists, and will move on to
compete at the Camp Jam Finals at Camp Laughing Waters
(Gilbertsville, Montgomery County) on June 7
-- The winner of the Finals will receive a free week at the GSEP Camp
of her choice
-- Sunday's Camp Jam competition will be judged by three music education
majors from West Chester University -- Austin Glatthorn, Rachael
Smolinsky and Jason Snyder
-- 30 girls competed in Camp Jam semi-finals throughout the Delaware and
Lehigh Valleys earlier this spring; 9 of them, along with Sunday's 3
winners, will advance to the Finals
WHY: Camp Jam will be an entertaining backdrop to GSEP's Summer Day Camp Open House, where girls and their families can tour the facilities, meet counselors and former campers, and learn about available programs:
-- Girl Scout Camps are open to all girls, ages 6 to 18
-- Girls do not need to be registered Girl Scouts to attend or
participate in camp programs. (A $10 membership fee, payable to Girl
Scouts of the USA, is required for non-registered girls)
-- All programs include American Red Cross-certified swim lessons, pool
recreation time, arts and crafts, nature programs and special events
-- Campership grants are available to help defray program costs on a
first-come, first-served basis, pending financial eligibility
-- Extended care and transportation services are available
-- All Girl Scout camp facilities, activities and programs accommodate
youngsters with disabilities
Child development studies demonstrate that youngsters who spend time in the outdoors have improved cognitive function, self-esteem, discipline -- and laugh more than children who do not. Natural environments can also provide a healing effect for youngsters facing emotional challenges.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania is the largest girl-serving organization in Pennsylvania, serving 42,000 girls and 14,000 volunteers in Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia counties. Girl Scout alumnae represent 80 percent of women in leadership and executive roles in the U.S., and 70 percent of women in the U.S. Congress.
