Fight On! At JayvsConan.com Tonight Show Fans Duke It Out Over O'Brien Replacing Leno at the Helm

Tonight Show Fans Can Voice Their Opinion, Vote for Their Favorite Comedian, and Check Out New Amateur Talent

BOISE, Idaho, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Amidst the chaos in response to NBC's announcement regarding a "new" show for Jay Leno, a new blog and polling site is already available for fans to have their say. Launched in November 2008, JayvsConan.com (http://www.jayvsconan.com/) is fast gaining traction.

In a move to reportedly keep Jay Leno in the NBC family, and away from competing networks, NBC's Chief Executive Jeff Zucker wooed the number-one-rated comedian into moving to prime time when he gives up the late-night slot to Conan O'Brien. The program is rumored to be named The Jay Leno Show.

The selection and announcement of Jay's successor was made in September 2004 on the 50th anniversary of the show's premiere. Until now no one really talked about what Jay would do afterwards; many thought he would retire.

"This news changes everything," says JayvsConan.com founder Travis Charters. "The Tonight Show is an iconic piece of American Pop Culture. For over 50 years it has been our adult lullaby -- easing us from a hard day's work to sleeping with a smile on our face. Haven't we been through enough this year? Everyone I talk to is shocked about this news, so I created an opportunity for the general public to be heard."

JayvsConan.com gives fans a wide-open venue to discuss the Tonight Show succession. Is Conan the best man for the job? Are there other choices? Whom would you like to watch? In addition to blogging, viewers can respond to several polls about Jay vs. Conan, NBC's announcement and their favorite comedians. Voting is easy and the results are shown immediately.

Amateur comedians will also find their spot on JayvsConan.com. The site offers budding stand-ups a chance to upload and share their videos. A panel of judges will review the videos and post their favorites. "We plan to post nearly all the videos," says Charters. "This is their chance to get global exposure and we won't post it if it's obscene." Visitors will get to vote for their favorite amateurs, too.

Following Johnny Carson, Leno has been at the Tonight Show helm since 1992. At age 58 he's in the prime of his career. He's not the first late-night entertainer to be asked to move to prime time. Both Carson and David Letterman were offered earlier gigs, but he is the first to accept since Steve Allan split his time between a Sunday-night prime time show and his late-night duties in 1956. Television is a completely different animal these days. Only time will tell how NBC's ideas will pan out.

The Tonight Show, now in its 54th season, is the third longest-running entertainment show in television history. Only the soap opera Guiding Light and The Hallmark Hall of Fame have had longer runs. Is this the beginning of the end of the Tonight Show as we know it?
