This Soul Man is the Real Deal

Forget New Film; Sam Moore Inducted into Vocal Group Hall of Fame

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Sam Moore, lead singer of legendary R&B duo Sam & Dave, was inducted last night into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in Youngstown, Ohio along with Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Journey, The Righteous Bros., Bread, The Pointer Sisters, Sly and The Family Stone and other legendary musical groups.

Ironically, Moore believes parts of his life story, as well as his trademark and music, are being ripped off this weekend by the new movie "Soul Men" starring Samuel L., Jackson and the late Bernie Mac.

In the movie, which has received mixed to poor reviews so far, Jackson and Mac play a duo called The Real Deal. Owen Gleiberman writes in this week's Entertainment Weekly: "Soul Men, disappointingly, ... is just another grumpy-old-men grousefest with a gooey center, like The Sunshine Boys or The Bucket List. Even its musical nostalgia comes off as more concocted than felt."

Moore needn't worry, though. The public, he says, knows the "real deal." He and late partner Dave Prater were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Moore, 73, is a favorite of talk shows such as David Letterman, Imus, Conan O'Brien, Leno and Jimmy Kimmel.

In 2006, he released the Grammy nominated "Overnight Sensational" produced by Randy Jackson ("American Idol") and featuring a raft of his pals including Sting, Jon Bon Jovi, Wynonna Judd, and Bruce Springsteen. The latter has called Sam "the greatest soul singer on planet Earth." Moore made a landmark appearance in a rare concert episode of "The Charlie Rose Show" with Sting in 2006. Moore has also been featured in the DA Pennebaker documentary, "Only the Strong Survive," Richard Linklater's "Tape Heads," and the movie "Blues Brothers 2000," the sequel to the original "Blues Brothers" movie which was an homage to Sam & Dave. Moore has often appeared as a guest artist with his friend and "Blues Brothers" originator Dan Aykroyd.

Next month, to underscore that Sam Moore is the Real Deal, Universal Home Video releases "Sam & Dave: The Original Soul Men," which features rare, vintage and previously unseen footage of the most popular duo ever to grace Atlantic or Stax Records during their heyday.
