Condemnation Grows for Offensive No on 8 TV Ad

Condemnation Grows for Offensive No on 8 TV Ad

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The president of a Christian school today joined Catholic and Protestant leaders in condemning a new "No on Prop. 8" ad scheduled to run on television stations today.

The ad, produced by a group called 'Courage Campaign Issues Committee' and viewable at http://www.kutv.com/content/news/topnews/story.aspx?content_id=e1f83189-843f-4 1d7-84c4-2029fbd9a2ce depicts supposed missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints committing a home invasion robbery of a lesbian couple's home to steal their wedding rings and rip up their marriage license.

Craig Garbe, president of Cornerstone Christian School in Roseville, today joined the California Catholic Conference, the pastor of Calvary Chapel Church of Thousand Oaks, and the Yes on 8 campaign in criticizing the ad.

"This bigoted and intolerant ad is an egregious breach of all political and broadcast decorum and in my opinion is a violation of regulations regarding hate speech, libel, and slander," said Garbe. "I see the caricature of Mormon missionaries as not just an attack on the LDS but on all people who claim to be Christian. The church is not seeking to usurp civil government, and the church is not endorsing illegal search and seizure. The depictions of these things in the ad are blatant lies." Garbe added that the ad attempts "to demonize the LDS church and, by implication, all people of faith, and particularly those who support Proposition 8."

McCoy's critical comments come quick on the heels of other critical comments by Rob McCoy, senior pastor of the Calvary Chapel church in Thousand Oaks and Bishop Stephen Blaire, president of the California Catholic Conference.

Although the Yes on 8 campaign called on the No on 8 campaign to denounce the ad yesterday, the No campaign still has not denounced it.
