Hola! Arkansas and Today's THV Announce Extensive Election Day Coverage in Spanish

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Hola! Arkansas, the premier bilingual newspaper in the state, announced yesterday that it would provide live coverage and a live Spanish interpretation of channel 11, Today's THV's (KTHV - Little Rock) primetime and late night live coverage of the Presidential Election Day on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.

The service is aimed at providing Arkansas' Spanish-speaking viewers with local and national election results, news briefs and news updates and analysis of the contest between Democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama and Republican Senator John McCain for the presidency of the United States.

For five years, the Arkansas community has enjoyed a live, seamless, simultaneous Spanish interpretation of the news broadcast on KTHV's SAP (Secondary Audio Program). SAP is available on most TV sets and can be accessed on the remote control or through the TV's Audio menu.

Today's THV started broadcasting the news in Spanish on Monday, July 28, 2003. Today's THV is Little Rock's first nightly source of live, local TV news broadcast in Spanish. Monday through Friday at 5:30 pm, Today's THV broadcasts a live Spanish interpretation of "CBS Evening News" with Katie Couric and "Today's THV at 6:00" with Liz Massey, Dawn Scott, Ed Buckner y Craig O'Neil.

On Election Day, November 4, Today's THV will offer complete coverage of one of the most-contested elections in recent history, beginning with national coverage at 5:30 pm with "CBS Evening News" with Katie Couric and local poll reporting on "Today's THV at 6:00." The live coverage is expected to end at 8:00 pm.

Juan Bustamante and Maura Lozano-Yancy of Hola! Arkansas Hispanic Media & Publishing Co., will provide the live interpreting services.

"On November 4, Arkansas' Spanish speakers and viewers will have the opportunity to watch events unfold as the live Spanish interpretation picks up continuous coverage broadcast on KTHV's SAP of the final hours when America determines who will be the nation's next president," said Maura Lozano-Yancy, President and Group Publisher of Hola! Arkansas.

"Current viewers of THV will not see or hear any change, since the Spanish interpretation is not on the station's primary audio channel," Lozano-Yancy added.

The growth of the Spanish-speaking community in Arkansas is the largest per-capita in the nation. "Arkansas' growing Hispanic community is becoming an important voting block in this state," Larry Audas, KTHV President and General Manager said. "Today's THV is pleased to have this great opportunity, providing important news and information when and where it's needed."

Today's THV News Director, Chuck Maulden added, "Election night will deliver news important to everyone in Arkansas and the nation and Today's THV will report this information on Arkansas' only live, local Spanish broadcast."

Lozano-Yancy said, "This is the second election we are offering this service to the community. We offered the extended service in the 2004 presidential election. With live interpretation of the presidential election, we are going to give Arkansas' Hispanic viewers news that is relevant and presented in their own language. No doubt, our partnership between Hola! Arkansas and Today's THV has been a win-win for the community."

SAP gives broadcasters the ability to send out the television audio signal in more than one language. Today's THV uses SAP Monday - Friday on THV news to broadcast the news in Spanish. When Spanish interpretation is not being broadcast, you should hear standard program audio.

"Today's THV in Spanish" can be seen and heard on SAP. You can select SAP on your television, VCR remote control, or by reviewing your menu for audio options (sometimes SAP can be selected through the MTS function). If you have any problems, please refer to your owner's manual," said Maulden.
