Record-Breaking Hannah Makes Box Office and 3D History in RealD 3D Theaters
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 96% percent of the theaters showing this weekend's number one film -- Disney's 3D film, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert -- used RealD 3D technology, the world's leading 3D experience.
Hannah brought in an estimated $31.1M in its opening weekend as the first film ever to be released solely in digital 3D cinemas -- nearly all of which are equipped with RealD's groundbreaking systems. The opening was the strongest opening ever of a film on Super Bowl weekend.
Michael Lewis, RealD Chairman, CEO, and Co-founder said, "This is a fantastic success for our colleagues at Disney and for our theater partners who deploy Disney Digital 3D using RealD 3D systems. With a box-office average over $45,534 per screen, it's clear that moviegoers want today's top-quality 3D, which is RealD 3D."
RealD glasses were passed out prior to the film around the country, giving families the opportunity to experience the live-action concert in immersive 3D with no headaches, eyestrain, or other effects of older 3D technologies. Cyara Pinkos, 9, from Santa Monica, and her mother, Cynthia Pinkos said, "We loved the movie!" Cyara continued, "It was even better than expected." At the theater Ms. Pinkos stated, "We loved what 3D brought to the experience for us: the glasses were comfortable and the 3D effects were a lot of fun."
According to Sheryl Fisher of Springfield, VA: "I took my daughter to the Hannah Montana 3D movie concert this past Friday because, like many parents, I was unable to get tickets to the actual concert when it was in our area. Prior to seeing the film I have to admit I was a bit skeptical when I heard about the 3D effect because my only frame of reference has been those uncomfortable, tacky stock card paper 3D glasses with the red/blue lenses that provide minimal 3D effects during the performance and are uncomfortable to wear. But instead, I was blown away by the incredible 3D technology! This movie concert was such an enjoyable experience for my daughter and myself and we both commented, after the movie, that this was actually BETTER than attending the live concert because we weren't stuck in 'the nosebleed section' of a stadium peering through binoculars. I told my husband, this was the best 3D I have ever seen and look forward to attending movies released on the RealD platform in the future!"
