Cox Communications Contributes Nearly $11 Million to Northern Virginia Organizations in 2007

HERNDON, Va., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications continued its strong philanthropic tradition in 2007, contributing nearly $11 million in cash and in-kind contributions to schools, non-profits and other organizations across Northern Virginia. Last year Cox supported dozens of community groups through financial support, as well as free cable television air-time that equaled millions of dollars in value.

"I'm proud to report that Cox continued its focus on supporting youth, education and technology in the community in 2007," said Janet Barnard, senior vice president and general manager for Cox Northern Virginia. "Once again, our local employees gave generously of their own personal time to volunteer throughout the year."

Cox also hosted several events in 2007, including the annual Cox Movies Under the Moon, which raised more than $17,000 to support INOVA Fairfax Hospital for Children. The Cox Hispanic Heritage Festival in Herndon, a yearly event free to the public, also raised $10,000 to support Hispanics Against Child Abuse.

In 2007, the Cox Community Connects Fund awarded $50,000 to innovative after-school programs in Fairfax County, including Liberty Promises, Nadar Por Vida and the Around School Enrichment Initiative, featuring Bailey's Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences.

In 2007, Cox also leveraged the new Cox Local Edition to showcase area non-profit and community organizations of all sizes. Cox Local Edition is an interview-style news segment on CNN Headline News that appears hourly, and features a variety of organizations looking to spread the word about an upcoming event or community mission. In 2007, such area organizations as the Hispanic Committee of Virginia, the Korean American Association and the Fairfax County Department of Family Services were showcased via Cox Local Edition.

In addition, dozens of local Cox employees volunteered hundreds of hours of their personal time throughout the year to support organizations both in Fairfax County and Fredericksburg. In 2007 Cox's leadership team continued to participate on a variety of Boards of Directors, including regional Boys and Girls Clubs, the Center for Multicultural Human Services and Leadership Fairfax.

Finally, Cox Northern Virginia's nearly 1,000 local employees donated their personal money in 2007 to support needy families in Fairfax County and Fredericksburg. This initiative is part of Cox's annual holiday gift- collection drive, done in partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Family Services.
