Whether you've recently purchased a puppy or you are considering adopting an animal from a shelter, there is now a place to go to for advice -- http://www.caninekingdom.com/.
New Additions is an internet TV series featuring Tammy Mehmed, known to San Franciscans as "The Puppy Nanny" and her new puppy, Jester. New Additions consists of both a television program and blog.
"We wanted to show dog parents how it's done day-by-day and hour-by-hour," says Mary Beth Close, founder of Canine Kingdom. "The sad fact is that most dogs don't live to see their second birthday. It doesn't have to be that way. There are answers and we are dedicated to making them available."
The Canine Kingdom was begun in 1999 to facilitate understanding between pet parents and their dogs. Its goal is to cut through the layers of misinformation and bring pet parents validated techniques and products.
The series will feature two adoptions. The first features Mehmed, an expert trainer and protege of the world-famous puppy trainer, Ian Dunbar. Tammy's household already consists of an eight-year-old female dog.
In the second, a Long Island mother, Ashley Monsono, will introduce an adult dog from a shelter into her home. As the mother of a mildly autistic five year old, she wants the experience to be rewarding and therapeutic for both child and canine.
"It is our hope that the show will help thousands of new and would-be pet parents to happily and successfully assimilate canines into their household," says Close. "It's important for dog parents to know that they are not alone. Most dogs that end up in shelters are there because of perceived behavioral problems, almost all of which are preventable. Getting a good start goes a long way to creating a happy and lasting relationship within a pet household."
