New Public TV Series Teaches Kids about Money & Entrepreneurs

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From the creators of the Emmy Award-winning series Bill Nye the Science Guy comes a fun, fast-paced new public television series that teaches kids how to manage their own money. Produced in high-definition, Biz Kid$ is designed to entertain, engage and ultimately elevate young people's knowledge about money and finance.

Geared toward school-aged children, the 26-episode, 30-minute weekly series will premiere Sunday, January 27 on many stations across the country (check local listings). Every episode introduces several young entrepreneurs and philanthropists who share their success stories.

At a time when only 10 percent of youth in America graduate high school with any personal finance instruction, Biz Kid$ helps kids understand the importance of starting good financial habits early on. In fact, of the many young people who now drop out of college, more than half leave because of bankruptcy - not bad grades.

With a clear mission to educate young people about finances and help reverse this trend, the producers worked in partnership with JA Worldwide(R) (Junior Achievement(R)) to create a strong curriculum and companion materials for the series. Through clever skits and educational segments, the show teaches the fundamental basics of saving, budgeting, investing, and giving back to the community.

"We profile real kids running real businesses, from big companies with product lines to small businesses like dog-walking," says Biz Kid$ Executive Producer Jamie Hammond. "The series also shows kids who are running businesses to advance social causes and give back to their communities. This humanizes the financial literacy aspect of the production and shows kids the range of possibilities available to anyone who wants to become a biz kid."

Free curriculum and other resources for teachers and parents can be downloaded from http://www.bizkids.com/. The site also features clips from the series and invites kids to apply to be on the show. Visitors can sign up for the show's monthly newsletter, The Vault, which offers ideas on how kids can start their own businesses, plus hints on earning money and tips on making their money grow.

Biz Kid$ is produced in association with JA Worldwide and WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, New York. It is distributed by American Public Television. Major funding for Biz Kid$ is provided by a coalition of America's Credit Unions.
