The Weather Channel Announces The 2007 Forecast Earth Hot List; Individuals and Organizations Making an Impact on Long-Term Global Climate Change
Gore, Schwarzenegger and Wal-Mart Included on Second Annual List
ATLANTA, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Forecast Earth, a weekly television program and broadband site dedicated to climate change developed by The Weather Channel (http://climate.weather.com/), today announced the second annual Forecast Earth Hot List, recognizing individuals, groups or companies that during 2007 initiated, undertook or encouraged positive action aimed at meeting the challenge of mitigating long-term global climate change. The list was announced on The Weather Channel weekly program Forecast Earth, which is hosted by Dr. Heidi Cullen and posted to the Forecast Earth site, which will have a section dedicated to the list, online discussions and video clips of those named.
The Forecast Earth Hot List was determined by a panel of environmentalists, academics, scientists and editors from The Weather Channel and will be published annually. The 2007 Hot List exemplifies the global climate change movement during this past year and where the debate is headed. The Forecast Earth Hot List includes the following individuals, groups and companies:
-- Al Gore - the former U.S. vice president who shared a Nobel Peace
Prize win for his work on climate change and global warming, and
put those subjects onto an international stage with Live Earth, a
world-wide, day-long concert on July 7.
-- Andrew Revkin - the New York Times science writer has been reporting
on the environment since 1995. Revkin has been to the Arctic three
times, and in 2003 became the first Times reporter to file stories and
photos from the sea ice around the Pole.
-- Arnold Schwarzenegger - the governor of California has made reducing
emissions a cause celebre for his state. Schwarzenegger signed into
law a bill imposing improved mileage standards on auto makers and is
currently in the process of suing the EPA to enforce the new
standards.
-- Eileen Claussen - the head of the PEW Center on Global Climate Change
spent much of 2007 appearing before congressional committees educating
government officials on possible actions that would mitigate climate
change and global warming without restricting economic growth.
-- Majora Carter - the executive director of Sustainable South Bronx,
advocates eco-friendly urban renewal as a way to alleviate poverty,
creating positive physical environments. Carter also has championed a
skilled green-collar workforce with personal and economic stakes in
their urban environment.
-- Rajendra Pachauri - chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change, shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. The IPCC met four
times in 2007, publishing the findings on climate change and global
warming from a consensus of scientists and government officials.
-- Stephen Schneider - acclaimed scientist and Stanford University
professor, was a key contributor to the IPCC in its reports issued in
2007.
-- Thomas L. Friedman - the New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning author
and columnist, produced a wide-ranging body of work in 2007 focused on
climate change, global warming and the environment, highlighted by the
April 15th Times magazine article, "The Power of Green."
-- Van Jones - co-founder of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights,
focuses on green economic development for urban America. In June, the
city of Oakland adopted a proposal from the Ella Baker Center and the
Oakland Apollo Alliance to create a "Green Jobs Corps," which will
train youth for eco-friendly "green-collar jobs."
-- Wal-Mart - the multi-billion dollar corporation and world's largest
retailer, has instituted numerous eco-friendly initiatives aiming to
become a "good steward of the environment." In 2005, Wal-Mart
implemented a program to increase energy efficiency, increasing fuel
efficiency in its truck fleet by 25% over three years and doubling it
within ten, reducing overall emissions by 20% in seven years, and
reducing energy use at stores by 30%.
