Helping Couples Fight Prostate Cancer, This Week on Your Cancer Today(TM)

Helping Couples Fight Prostate Cancer, This Week on Your Cancer Today(TM)

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- When men leave the hospital after prostate surgery, they are still in need of care and treatment. More often than not, a spouse is called on to be the caregiver. Unfortunately, the spouse often lacks the information and confidence necessary to provide all the care needed. In many cases, the caregiver has reported being under more stress than the patient.

Laurel Northouse, Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, has developed a program that helps couples deal with all aspects of prostate cancer treatment and recovery. Her program provides counseling to both the patient and the spouse prior to treatment. During the sessions, couples are given information on: family communication, maintaining optimism, coping strategies, dealing with uncertainty, and symptom management. Dr. Northouse believes that: "Care is best, when prostate cancer is treated as a couples' disease."

Colon Cancer is the third most deadly form of cancer in the U.S. A compound in peanuts, red wine and grapes, resveritol, has been tested in treating colon cancer, but research has demonstrated that the compound may be more effective in prevention.

Your Cancer Today Interviews Randall Holcombe, MD Director of Research, at the University of California Irvine. Dr. Holcombe believes that red grapes may be one of the best foods for preventing colon cancer. With individuals that have a family history of colon cancer, moderate red wine consumption (1 to 2 glasses a week) may reduce the likelihood of developing this cancer.
