Extreme Networks Provides Resilient Wired and Wireless Network to the UK's Basildon & Thurrock Hospital
Advanced Infrastructure Serves as Network Foundation for the Hospital's State-of-the-Art Cardiothoracic Center
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. today announced the completion of a new network infrastructure to support a trust-wide Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) solution at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals, part of the NHS Foundation Trust in Essex, United Kingdom, including its state-of-the-art, Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC).
The network was designed and installed with the support of Extreme Networks and its partner Scalable Networks, an independent leader in Secure Convergence solutions and services. The network was designed to meet the Trust's current and future performance and availability needs, incorporating headroom for new generation applications and imaging systems.
Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust manages three hospitals in the region, treating 335,000 patients annually. Its new PACS system will enable the delivery of complex radiology and cardio images across the Trust at the touch of a button, improving efficiency, waiting times and overall patient care.
Trust facilities include the state-of-the-art Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC), which provides specialist heart and lung surgery for patients nationally. The CTC is among the most modern of its kind, offering the latest equipment and technology throughout, including, state-of-the-art operating rooms and cardiac catheter laboratories. The center has facilities for 100 patients and the capacity to perform 1,400 surgical procedures and 2,500 cardiology procedures each year.
The Trust went sought out a new network infrastructure, requiring a comprehensive solution that would be highly resilient, provide additional server capacity and offer support to new wireless mobility applications.
Shortlisted alongside multiple systems integrators, Scalable Networks was awarded the project for its proposal which incorporated a complete solution from Extreme Networks. This comprised multiple BlackDiamond(R) modular Ethernet switches for the core, Summit(R) X450e fixed switches for the edge, and Summit X450a switches for server aggregation. Extreme Networks Summit WM 2000 wireless LAN controllers and Altitude access points were specified to support secure wireless LAN connectivity.
The deployment of BlackDiamond switches resulted in a 10 Gigabit core network with a bandwidth upgrade providing five times the switching performance of the hospital's previous network core, at least double the density for Gigabit switching ports, and increased availability due to the ExtremeXOS(TM) modular software architecture. These network scalability features combined to support the addition of new locations such as The Essex CTC.
Basildon & Thurrock also implemented the Draeger Infinity Solution, a Patient Monitoring System that allows a monitor to automatically switch from wired to wireless networking while maintaining all parameters. As a result, by leveraging the performance and scalability of the Extreme Networks wired and wireless solution, the hospital's staff is now able to continuously monitor patients, even during transport.
"Extreme Networks is proud to be one of the key technology partners working with Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust supporting the very latest innovations in patient care," said Paul Phillips, country director for the United Kingdom for Extreme Networks. "Supporting specific medical applications like these truly delivers on our vision of solving complex networking issues for our customers."
