WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- "The President's Own" United States Marine Band will depart Washington, D.C., Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, for its annual fall concert tour, performing 43 concerts in 49 days throughout northern and eastern Maryland, Delaware, northern and eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. The tour will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 18 in Centreville, Md. Concerts are free, but tickets are required. Director Colonel Michael J. Colburn has adapted several concert programs to entertain the diverse audiences across the Northeast. Highlights include music by Sousa, Sondheim, and Bernstein. Each tour concert ends with a Salute to the Armed Forces of America, featuring all the military service songs in the Armed Forces Medley.
Concerts will feature a variety of soloists including principal saxophone Gunnery Sergeant Steve Longoria playing John Williams' Suite from Catch Me If You Can (Escapades for Saxophone and Orchestra), assistant principal percussionist Gunnery Sergeant Christopher Rose performing William Childs' Concerto for Percussion and Concert Band, and mezzo-soprano vocalist Staff Sergeant Sara Dell'Omo singing "E voi da buon marito ... Non vo gia che vi suonino" from La cifra, Charles Ives' Memories, and The Harold Arlen Songbook.
While patrons make Marine Band performances memorable, it is the sponsors who make the concerts a reality. Sponsors provide a concert site, supply ushers, print and distribute tickets, execute a publicity campaign and prepare a concert program. Admission to all concerts is free. Typically, sponsors are newspapers, radio and television stations, educational institutions, chambers of commerce, public service oriented organizations and local governments.
Upcoming tour regions include the Midwest in 2008, West Coast in 2009, Southwest in 2010, and Southeast in 2011. For the states specific to each region, please visit www.marineband.usmc.mil/NATIONAL_TOUR/index.htm.
Anyone interested in pursuing sponsorship of a Marine Band tour concert may contact the National Tour Director at (703) 614-1405.
The Marine Band is America's oldest professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams. Given the title "The President's Own" by Thomas Jefferson, the Marine Band's primary mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
