NBC 5 Names New Anchor/Reporter Ashanti Blaize
DALLAS and FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- NBC 5 hires Ashanti Blaize as anchor/reporter, effective October 15, 2007. Blaize, along with Kevin Cokely, will anchor the NBC 5 Weekend Report at 5 p.m. and NBC 5 News at 10 p.m. on Sunday evenings. She will also report four days per week.
Blaize comes to NBC 5 from KLAS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas where she was a general assignments reporter. She graduated from Columbia University, receiving a bachelor's degree in sociology. While at Columbia, she interned at ABC News and developed her love of journalism.
Ashanti attended journalism school at the University of Miami. While getting her master's degree in communications she worked at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel as an intern and field producer. She was also an anchor, reporter and producer for UMTV, a cable station out of Coral Gables, Florida.
After graduating from the University of Miami, she began working with KFOX-TV in El Paso, Texas where she was a morning reporter.
Blaize was honored with a New Mexico AP Award in 2004 for her breaking news coverage of a snowstorm that paralyzed parts of Southwest Texas. She's reported on a myriad of stories from Senator John Edwards' campaign visit to Las Cruces, New Mexico during the 2004 Presidential Elections, to one of the largest fires in El Paso's history.
