U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for June 25
WASHINGTON, June 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:
MONDAY, JUNE 25: A MALIGNED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
Profile America -- Monday, June 25th. If there's a musical equivalent of the late Rodney Dangerfield, who complained that he never got any respect, it would be the accordion. During June, fans of this neglected musical instrument have been celebrating Accordion Awareness Month, with the idea of increasing its popularity beyond polka bands. The earliest ancestors of the accordion are traced to China of some 2,000 years ago, while the modern instrument had its beginnings in Vienna and Berlin in the 1820s. In the U.S., the accordion was seen for years played by Lawrence Welk on his long-running television show. Accordions are part of the more than $5 billion worth of musical instruments sold each year at music stores across the U.S. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at http://www.census.gov/.
