LeMel and Sharell Feature Keely Smith at 2nd Annual Concert for the Society of Singers June 22nd at the El Rey Theatre
LOS ANGELES, May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the success of last June's sold-out 3 Men and a Big Band benefit concert, the Society of Singers (SOS) will present 2 Men ... A Woman and a Big Band, a show at which longtime record executives and occasional singers Jerry Sharell and Gary LeMel will be joined by the legendary pop and jazz singer Keely Smith at The El Rey Theatre on June 22nd at 8pm. The singers will be backed by the Gregg Field Big Band, with Pat Boone serving as master of ceremonies. The performers will also be joined by Sharell's son Jerry J. Sharell.
All proceeds will go to the Society of Singers (SOS), an organization that benefits the health and welfare of professional singers worldwide and awards scholarships to students pursuing their education in the vocal arts.
"The first concert was a smash, and some very prominent people came up to me that night saying, 'You have to do this every year,'" says Sharell, the president and CEO of SOS. Sharell sang in a Pennsylvana-based Doo-Wop group in the late 50's and cut a couple of singles before joining the record industry and working at A & M Records, Buddah Records and Elektra/Asylum Records during its "tiffany" years of the 1970s and '80s. LeMel began his career as a jazz vocalist and later a producer before moving to Casablanca Records, Boardwalk Records and Columbia Pictures; he has recorded five albums while spending the last two decades heading the music department at the Warner Bros. studio.
Keely Smith enjoyed her first success in the 1950s with a string of classic duets with Louis Prima. In recent years, she has recorded a string of well-received albums, including the Grammy-nominated "Keely Sings Sinatra" in 2001. She still performs regularly, including a recent month-long engagement at the prestigious Cafe Carlyle in New York City.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Society of Singers' Emergency Relief Fund and the Scholarship Fund. The El Rey Theatre is located at 5515 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles CA. Tickets are $250, $200, and $150 per person. For more information, and to purchase tickets, call SOS at (818) 995-7100.
