The Citizen's Right to Inform and be Informed

The Citizen's Right to Inform and be Informed

CARACAS, Venezuela, May 17/PRNewswire/ --

- TeleSUR Will Hold a Debate on Media Ownership

The television channel TeleSUR will organize an international conference
called "The citizen's right to inform and be informed. A debate on media
ownership." The conference will take place in Venezuela from May 18 to 20. In
this debate, journalists, media executives and intellectuals will analyze the
media industry and the right to information. This will be performed in
different group discussions before an audience. The event, which will take
place at Teatro Teresa Carreño in Caracas, will open its doors to the public.

The inauguration will be held on May 18, after which four discussion
panels will be held for the remaining duration of the event. It will conclude
on May 20 at noon. The following issues will be discussed: "The impunity and
power of the great communications market," " Governments' responsibility,"
"The use of the airwaves as public property," "corporate ownership of the
media" and "Alternatives to the current situation." Besides the twenty or so
speakers, international members of TeleSUR's advisory board will participate.
Most of them are film and documentary makers.

Among the experts who have been confirmed are the director of Mexican
newspaper "La Jornada," Carmen Lira; the director of "Le Monde Diplomatique,"
Ignacio Ramonet; Argentinean congressman and journalist, Miguel Bonasso;
Belgian journalist, Michel Collon; the journalist specializing in community
media, Ignacio López Vigil; editor of the British magazine, "New Left
Review," Tariq Alí, and so on up to about twenty specialists. In addition to
the above specialists, there are another similar number of members of the
TeleSUR advisory board, such as the film directors: Pino Solanas (Argentina),
Jorge Sanjinés (Bolivia), Tristán Bauer (Argentina) and Orlando Senna
(Brazil) and the actor Danny Glover (U.S.A.). Additionally, there will be
executives from Canal 7 Argentina, from Cubavisión, Canal 7 from Bolivia and
from the other Latin American television stations. These of course include
Venezuelan stations. All of the debates will be open to the public at the
Teatro Teresa Carreño, and they will be broadcast by TeleSUR.

The president of TeleSUR, Andrés Izarra, stressed that "celebrities of
this stature have met in Caracas on numerous occasions. However, they have
never done so to intellectually approach a topic such as the media and
furthermore, at a conference with its doors open to all citizens." "These
celebrities are coming together at a very important moment for Venezuela and
Latin America. Now is when the debate on media ownership, the public use of
the airwaves, and citizens' rights to make themselves heard and be informed
is a discussion topic throughout the world," he added.
