Cox Communications Launches Free International Programming Tier
Cox to also offer new International Calling Plan with aggressive rates
HERNDON, Va., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications Northern Virginia has announced the launch of a free international programming tier, available to all Cox Digital Cable customers throughout Fairfax County and the Fredericksburg region. The new International Tier will initially include Korean programmers tvK, WKTV and Korea 1, Pan-Asian programmer ImaginAsian, Chinese channel CCTV-4, and eight MHz networks with compelling Russian, Dutch and French content.
Cox Digital Cable customers who subscribe to the Sports and Information, Movie or Variety tiers will enjoy the International Tier for free starting in summer 2007. The new lineup will complement Cox's Paquete Latino tier, which focuses on meeting the needs of Hispanic viewers with 20 exciting channels of content.
"The addition of an international programming tier reflects the growing diversity of our customer base and our communities," said Janet Barnard, vice president and region manager of Cox Northern Virginia. "This launch will offer something for everyone, and we eagerly anticipate its popularity with customers."
The new International Tier will offer, among other things, the best Korean content from MBC, KBS, YTN, and Arirang. While DirecTV charges about $25 a month for similar content, Cox will offer this programming for free on the new tier. Cox Digital Cable is available to virtually all of Cox's nearly 250,000 customers.
"As a programmer on Cox's new international tier, we'll be able to reach hundreds of thousands of consumers," said Young Chun, president and chairman of Washington Korean TV (WKTV). "We look forward to entertaining and informing our viewers in a new and exciting way."
Cox has also announced the launch of Simply Worldwide, a new international calling plan. The new plan will let Cox customers connect with friends and family in more than 70 countries, including Mexico, the United Kingdom, South Korea and China. Calling rates for Simply Worldwide will range between 5 and 12 cents per minute with a $1.99 monthly fee.
This compares favorably to the Regional Bell Operating Company's International Choice plan, where customers pay $4 a month and sharply higher per-minute rates. Cox also plans to launch Simply Worldwide by early summer 2007.
Each year Cox Northern Virginia contributes about $14 million in cash and in-kind contributions to schools, non-profits and other organizations across its service area. With a keen focus on supporting diversity in Fairfax County and the Fredericksburg region, Cox assisted more than 75 local organizations through financial support and free on-air time in 2006.
Recently, Cox Communications earned a coveted spot on DiversityInc magazine's 2007 Top 50 Companies for Diversity(R) list. The list is determined through a comprehensive survey that measures CEO commitment, corporate communications and supplier diversity.
"We've always counted on Cox Communications throughout the years to support our organization," said Yeshashwork Kibour of the Center for Multicultural Human Services. "Through its financial support and participation on our Board of Directors, we continue to enjoy a fantastic partnership with Cox."
