New Poll Finds Dramatic Rise in Public Concern About Biological and Chemical Terrorism; Americans Continue to Rate Cancer as #1 Health Threat

Trust for America's Health (TFAH) today issued results from a new survey that finds concern about biological and chemical terrorism and food contamination have grown significantly in the past year. Seventy percent of Americans ranked chemical terrorism as a major concern in 2007, which is an 18-point jump from the level of concern expressed in 2006. Fears about a biological attack like anthrax or smallpox increased 14 points from last year to 64 percent in 2007. The largest increase in concern about biological and chemical terrorism was evident in self-identified ideological conservatives, whose concern about chemical and biological terrorism increased 19 and 17 percentage points respectively.

New York Blood Center Launches Awareness Campaign During Black History Month Urging African Americans to Donate Blood in February

As Black History Month kicks off, New York Blood Center (NYBC) has launched a public awareness campaign calling on metropolitan area African Americans to donate blood to help combat the debilitating complications of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) -- which predominantly affects African Americans -- and help continue recent progress in building the blood inventory to appropriate levels.

As part of its campaign, NYBC will conduct 66 targeted blood drives during February throughout its five service regions (Brooklyn/Staten Island, Long Island, Manhattan, New Jersey, Hudson Valley) and at each drive, distribute materials celebrating the legacy of Dr. Charles Drew, an African American who created the world's first blood bank. Additionally, in honor of the month,

each donor will receive a free t-shirt that says "Black History: It's In Our Blood."
