Orb Networks Names New CEO
Silicon Valley Visionary and Proven Leader Joe Costello to Head Fast-Growing Digital Media Company
EMERYVILLE, Calif., Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Orb Networks(TM) (www.orb.com ) announced today that the company's co-founder and chairman of the board, Joe Costello, has been selected as its new CEO. Costello takes the position with a long record of entrepreneurial leadership. He was named top-performing CEO of all publicly-traded companies in North America in 1997 by Chief Executive Magazine and joined Upside Magazine's "Elite 100" list of top executives in that same year.
"Orb has the opportunity to set the pace in the exciting new world of digital media convergence," said Costello. "Consumers are realizing they can enjoy their digital media anytime, anywhere with Orb and the growth is explosive. Together with our partners, we're pushing out innovative services and products with Orb to tap the power of the Internet and put the consumer in control."
The company's award-winning, free MyCasting(TM) service is the first of its kind to allow consumers mobile access to all their home digital media -- including streaming TV, videos, photos, and music. Since its launch in late 2004, Orb has attracted more than a half million users with a record 67 million hours of digital media streamed from home computers to Internet-enabled mobile phones, PDAs and laptops.
Costello takes the reins of Orb at a time when digital media market forecasts are strong. The Diffusion Group predicts in its "Trends in Digital Media Storage" that by 2010, more than 160 million households worldwide will have home networks with almost one billion connected devices. Internet use continues to rise rapidly with consumers going online for all forms of media consumption. Another telling indicator of digital media convergence -- online audio and video file transfers alone have tripled in the past 18 months averaging more than two billion monthly and eMarketer forecasts more than half of the US population will access video content online by 2010.
"Joe is a visionary who anticipated media convergence on the Internet in the late 1990s," and said Gary Morgenthaler, general partner at Morgenthaler Ventures and board member. "He co-founded Orb to execute on a vision that gave users access to all their digital media in an easy, secure, and cost-effective way. Joe is a uniquely talented market strategist and one of Silicon Valley's legendary CEOs. Orb Networks is fortunate to have recruited a leader of Joe's experience and ability."
In addition to his new position at Orb Networks, Costello currently serves as chairman of think3, a global provider of product design and development software solutions. Prior to think3, Costello was president and chief executive officer at Cadence Design Systems, Inc., for more than a decade. Under his leadership, Cadence became the world's leading supplier of electronic EDA software and services and one of the 10 highest-grossing software vendors in the world.
In the past three months, Orb introduced the next generation of its award-winning MyCasting service, was the first to offer users the ability to enjoy YouTube(TM) videos on mobile devices and has launched new partnerships with Hutchison 3 Group, Vodafone, Orange, Nokia and AOL Winamp.
