Children Take 'Stand Up' Centerstage In Genre Defying Project
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A microphone stands on a darkened stage. Out of the dark, a person enters, a little person, six years old to be exact. He is about to take on the audacious task that so many talented adults have crumbled under. He is about to do Stand-up. And although the topics aren't designed for the normal "stand up" crowd, the results are the same, laughter. Tri Destined Studios and Comedy Kids Productions are proud to announce the wrapping of their project "Comedy Kids."
Like Lenny Bruce and Redd Foxx in the 60's, Richard Pryor and George Carlin in the 70's, and Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy in the 80's, the stand-up genre is being redefined. But, instead of shifting the complexity of the subject matter or swaying the structure to fit the times, the producers reestablished the art-form by changing the person at the center, the comedian.
Children performing comedy is nothing new. Kids helped popularize the genre, making icons out of the likes of Shirley Temple and The Little Rascals. However, stand-up has long been regarded as the most difficult aspect of comedy to master, proving to be an incredibly terrifying experience for even the most charismatic of adult comedians. It was never even thought that children could seriously perform in this manner, let alone perfect it.
To face this mission the producers, ND Brown, Stephanie Keys and Tiffany Rose, brought together a dynamic collective, enlisting Ron DeShay (Producer of "American Idol") to Executive Produce. To pen the piece they signed up Gregory Anderson (whose screenplay is the basis for the upcoming Sony Screen Gems film "Stomp the Yard," opening January 12, starring pop stars Chris Brown and NeYo) and to direct, Trey Haley (co-director of upcoming Warner Brothers / Asylum Records film, "American Dream"). Then, to perform, the producers handpicked child entertainers (ages 5 - 17) from Nickelodeon, Disney, ABC Family, Fox, and several hit films including "Daddy Day Care," "The Benchwarmers," and "The Ant Bully." The results are both refreshing, engaging, and a true testament to the enduring power of children and comedy.
