Not So Funny: SNL Steals Skit From Stashwax

Not So Funny: SNL Steals Skit From Stashwax

Cease and Desist Order Sent to End Copyright Infringement of High-Traffic Comedy Sketch

NEW YORK, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- In a landmark David v. Goliath case, Saturday Night Live (SNL), the longest running sketch comedy show on television, is being accused of copyright infringement by Stashwax (www.stashwax.com), the new comedy web TV channel featuring a 24/7 round up of gut busting original content. Last week, a cease and desist order was sent to Lorne Michaels, Executive Producer of SNL, demanding that the show end all visibility of its video skit, "SNL Apocolypto Re-Cut", which is said to replicate content and concept from a sketch created and released by Stashwax months earlier.

The SNL skit parodies Mel Gibson's latest film "Apocolypto" combined with lines from his anti-Semitic tirade last summer when he was arrested in Malibu on a DUI charge. Stashwax argues that the SNL's skit bears striking resemblance to one they launched back in August 2006 on YouTube.com titled "Mel Gibson Hates Jews" which uses the film "Braveheart" as the setting for a Mel Gibson mockery. Both skits have received innumerable web traffic since their posts on popular viral video sites. The cease and desist order points to identical concepts and punch lines stolen from Stashwax's original content.

Saturday Night Live began airing in 1975 and is well known as a breeding ground for the most shining stars in comedy. The show boasts a rich history and is considered a predecessor to the many sketch comedy endeavors that have followed suit.

Lloyd Grenache, President of Stashwax commented on SNL's offense: "Stay off our gags Michaels. Gibson is our Anti-Semite - go find your own."

The cease and desist order which was sent to Mr. Michaels earlier this week constitutes copyright infringement by citing violation of 17 U.S.C Section 501, et seq. A legal source representing Stashwax commented by stating, "If SNL does not take complete responsibility and terminate their distribution of the 'SNL Apocolypto Re-cut' video, we will take the further steps necessary to remedy this situation."
