Actor and Activist Richard Dreyfuss to Speak at BHCC

BOSTON, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Actor and activist, Richard Dreyfuss will speak at Bunker Hill Community College on Tuesday, January 30, 2007. His presentation will take place in the A300 Auditorium at the Charlestown Campus located at 250 New Rutherford Avenue, Boston, MA 02129. The program will begin at 1pm and include a lecture and reception. This is free and open to the public, however, reservations are recommended. Academy Award-winner Richard Dreyfuss is best known for his high profile movie roles, but has always been a social and political activist. That role has brought him attention on the world stage where he champions education and advocates for a resolution to the Middle East conflict. The son of an attorney father and a peace activist mother, Dreyfuss launched his film career with a single line in The Graduate. And he later gained fame for his roles in blockbusters like Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. At age 30, he was the youngest man ever to win an Oscar for Best Actor for The Goodbye Girl in 1977.

Dreyfuss' life and career came to the brink in the 1980's when he succumbed to drug addiction. After a life-threatening car accident, during which he was under the influence of drugs, Dreyfuss confronted and ultimately overcame his addiction. Rebounding from that experience, he went on to success in Mr. Holland's Opus and as a TV and movie producer. He now concentrates his acting on theater. As an activist and speaker, he has devoted his time to promoting solutions to the Arab/Israeli conflict, as well as issues of modern warfare, international relations and American foreign policy. In November 2005, Dreyfuss became a Senior Associate Member of St. Antony's College, Oxford.

Bunker Hill Community College's Compelling Conversations Speaker Series will host civil rights activist Mary Frances Berry on March 1 and author and political analyst Juan Williams on April 26. In the past, the series featured the former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, best-selling author Barbara Ehrenreich and newscaster Ray Suarez, among others.
