Realscan 3D Does it Again; Delivers High Quality Digital Doubles for Tony Scott's 'Deja Vu'
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Realscan 3D (www.realscan3d.com), the next generation in mobile, high resolution, high color, structured light 3D scanning, today announced the delivery of scanned, animation-ready digital doubles of actors and a late model Ford Bronco for Touchtone Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' "Deja Vu." Currently in theatres, the film is directed by Tony Scott and stars Denzel Washington, Val Kilmer and Jim Caviezel.
Using high-resolution texture maps and geometry captured by Realscan 3D's RealCapture NexGen(TM) scanning pipeline, Realscan created ten human digital doubles for use in the film's computer generated crowd sequences. They also produced a digital replica of a Ford Bronco to match live action footage. The RealCapture NexGen pipeline allowed the models to be built with film quality textures and delivered to the production in less than a week.
"Asylum VFX needed the models quickly in order to post the sequences in time for the film to be released," said Joel Thornton, Founder and Vice President of Realscan 3D. "We gave them exactly what they needed, when they needed it, which allowed them to meet their deadlines. We are excited, along with many others, to see the finished product."
With the production filming in New Orleans just weeks after Hurricane Katrina, Realscan 3D had to adjust to a rapidly changing shooting schedule. In addition, the Bronco intended for scanning had been damaged during the practical filming and did not match the original live action footage. Another stunt truck was available, but it did not match the footage completely. In the end, the flexibility of the RealCapture scanning pipeline solved the problem by allowing the VFX crew to scan both trucks and mix and match elements from each vehicle to build one workable digital double. Realscan 3D is currently working on a number of other film and video game productions, including Walt Disney Pictures' "Underdog" and "Enchanted."
