About Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging
Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) with the Dilon 6800 Gamma Camera is a complementary diagnostic tool to detect breast cancer when post-mammogram evaluation is indicated. BSGI is able to detect early stage cancers, identify suspicious and difficult-to-interpret breast abnormalities, and help differentiate between benign and malignant tumors. Patients receive a small amount of a radiotracer agent via an injection in the arm that is absorbed by all cells in their body. Because cancerous cells have higher metabolic activity, they absorb a greater amount of the tracer and light up to reveal themselves as "hot spots" to the Dilon 6800.
