Tom Brokaw to Speak at Cuyahoga Community College Foundation Presidential Scholarship Luncheon
CLEVELAND, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cuyahoga Community College Foundation will present the 2006 Presidential Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, November 2, at 11:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Tom Brokaw, former Anchor and Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and author of The Greatest Generation will be the keynote speaker for this year's event.
The event, being called "Generations of Greatness," will benefit the Cuyahoga Community College Foundation Scholarships Funds. Since the luncheons began in 1992, over $3.3 million has been raised for scholarships to help those who might not otherwise be able to access education at Tri-C. It is expected that this year's sold-out Luncheon will be attended by more than 1,000 members of the Greater Cleveland community.
Brokaw stepped down from his role as anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News in December 2004 after 21 years. He remains employed by NBC News reporting and producing long-form documentaries and providing expertise during breaking news events. In addition, Brokaw is the author of the best selling The Greatest Generation, three other books and numerous articles, essays and commentaries for various print publications.
Brokaw has been recognized with many awards for reporting including the prestigious Peabody award in 2004. In addition he has earned numerous other awards including several Emmy, Overseas Press Club and National Headliner awards and in 2003 NBC Nightly News was honored with the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast. He joins a long and distinguished list of Presidential Scholarship Luncheon speakers including Tim Russert, Oprah Winfrey, Sam Donaldson, Hank Aaron, Senator John Glenn, Maya Angelou and Peter B. Lewis.
"We are excited to have award winning journalist and best selling author Tom Brokaw join us for this year's Luncheon," said Cuyahoga Community College President Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton. "This important event raises money to provide scholarships that recognize outstanding students and assist those in financial need. In today's society, it's what you know that makes a difference and many of our students would not be able to pursue post secondary education without the generosity of our community."
Opened in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College is Ohio's first community college and now the state's largest, serving 55,000 students each year. More than 700,000 county residents have come through Tri-C's doors. The college offers two-year associate degrees, certificate programs, and the first two years of a baccalaureate degree. The curriculum includes over 1,600 credit courses in more than 130 career, certificate and university transfer programs. Courses are offered at three campus locations, two Corporate College(R) facilities, many off-campus sites, and via television and the Internet.
