Joe Ahern Elected to Board of Directors of The Museum of Broadcast Communications
CHICAGO, Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Museum of Broadcast Communications (MBC) today welcomed Joseph Ahern, President and General Manager of CBS 2 Chicago, to its Board of Directors.
"We are thrilled to welcome Joe Ahern to the MBC board and look forward to his active participation and guidance. Joe is one of Chicago's most respected broadcast executives because of his commitment to the city and its organizations," said MBC Founder and President Bruce DuMont. "The MBC will benefit from Joe's vast network of civic and business leaders who admire his dedication and enthusiasm," DuMont added.
"I couldn't be more thrilled to join the Board of Directors of the MBC. I was there for the birth of the museum in 1983 and am now proud to see how far it has come as we look forward to the magnificent new building and exhibits at State and Kinzie," said Ahern. "The new museum will stand as a testament to the rich history of broadcasting in our city that now everyone in the Chicagoland area will be able to enjoy," he added.
In July 2006, CBS 2 Chicago committed $500,000 in cash and public service air time to the MBC. The gift will support the development of the new Museum of Broadcast Communications in downtown Chicago, scheduled to be completed in 2007. The CBS 2 Chicago Theater will be where visitors are introduced to a historic video retrospective.
Having returned to Chicago in 2002 to serve as President and General Manager of CBS 2 Chicago, Ahern led the way in the station's expansion of local news with the addition of the 6PM newscast during the week, and three hours of morning news on Saturdays and Sundays.
Ahern's broadcast philosophy is that a successful television station should be a leader in the community that it serves.
Ahern is dedicated to several civic and community organizations in Chicago. He serves on the board of the Chicago Central Area Committee, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, World Business Chicago and Children's Memorial Hospital. He is chairman of Loyola University's Council of Regents and also an active member of the Executive Club and the Economic Club of Chicago.
Before joining CBS 2, Ahern was President and General Manager of KGO- TV/San Francisco from 1998 to 2002. Prior to his KGO-TV experience, Ahern was Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Broadcasting for Walt Disney Television International, based in London.
Ahern served as President and General Manager of WLS-TV in Chicago from 1985 to 1997, where he was an early supporter of the MBC.
The Museum of Broadcast Communications, home to America's only National Radio Hall of Fame, is scheduled for completion in 2007 at State and Kinzie Streets in downtown Chicago. The state-of-the-art 70,000 square-foot museum will include the Radio Hall of Fame Rotunda, a working radio and television studio and interactive exhibits that will showcase broadcasting's leading personalities and historic trends
The new MBC will be the first public museum in the nation built to a Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) construction standard. Visit http://www.museum.tv/ for more information.
