West Virgina Woman Gets Free House Cleaning by Mistake and Ends Up On Martha Stewart
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- When Debbie from Barboursville, W.Va. returned home from work earlier this summer, her house was not the same as she had left it. She called the police to report that someone had been in her home. When the police asked her what was missing and/or damaged the woman said the only thing out of the ordinary was that her house was much cleaner than she had left it. Case closed.
Two weeks later, Debbie's son answered the door to find a worker from CottageCare, a local housecleaning service, ready to clean the house again. It was then discovered that the employee had inadvertently cleaned the wrong house two weeks earlier.
"The address of the house that was scheduled to be cleaned was one off from the one that was actually cleaned," said Tom Schrader, president and CEO of the Kansas City-based franchise company. "Both houses had similar means of entry and had a similar number of rooms."
Believe it or not, this was not the first time this has happened. "Streets are poorly marked, houses are missing numbers and there are still many trusting people who leave their doors unlocked," said Schrader. "Thankfully for us, people don't seem to mind on the few occasions this has happened. Debbie even tried to pay us for cleaning her house. Of course, we couldn't take her money."
Debbie doesn't have to worry about cleaning her house again for a while. When the Martha Stewart Show heard Debbie's story, they asked her to be a guest on the show. On Friday, September 22, she and Martha had a phone conversation about her new clean house, including her gleaming floors after which Martha commented that she would like CottageCare to come clean for her.
CottageCare gave Debbie a year's worth of free cleaning for her trouble.
