New War Movement Starting in Midwest
Celebrity entertainers take sides on war
BRANSON, Mo., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the growing unrest regarding America's military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, a new initiative has been started in the Midwest town of Branson, Mo. A group of entertainers have formed their own battle line in an attempt to insure the men and women who are doing the fighting are not forgotten among the partisan politics and nightly news discussions of whether the United States should, or should not, continue the war efforts.
In the process, the group is launching a fund raiser for four non-profit military and veterans' support organizations, one of which is a cause supported by Cher, another by Tony Orlando, another by the National Association of Broadcasters and the fourth is the only national Vietnam veterans organization congressionally chartered.
"It doesn't matter if you are for, or against the war," said Terry Wayne, producer of the #1 Hits Of The 60's Show in Branson, "you must be FOR our troops at all times."
Wayne, with the support of members of the cast and band of the show, has launched S.T.A.N.D. For The Troops, a non-profit, non-partisan organization to support past and present military personnel and their families, and to "Rally America" behind our troops.
"S.T.A.N.D. is an acronym for Sixties Then And Now Delegation, a fitting title for the new movement, considering the main focus of our show is the music and events of the 1960's," said Wayne. "As we pay tribute to Vietnam Veterans during our show performances, we are reminded nightly of the price of freedom -- a price that is paid in a time of war and peace."
S.T.A.N.D. For The Troops and their first fund-raising project of a two song CD was announced at a kickoff press conference, rally and free concert Sept. 20. The newly released CD, recorded by the cast and band of #1 Hits Of The 60's, features "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" and "God Bless America."
"Both songs have very powerful voice overs by President Bush that leave no doubt this is a 'Rally Call' for all Americans," said Wayne.
The show's bass player, Brian Zerbe, who initiated the idea, said, "There was a natural connection for 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.' It was a rallying point for the military serving in Vietnam, and we want it to be a rallying point for our current troops. It's all about getting the job done and bringing the troops home safely, as soon as possible."
The CD is available online at http://www.standforthetroops.org/ for $5 + shipping. One hundred percent of the profits from the sale of the CD will be donated to the following organizations: Vietnam Veterans of America, Operation-Helmet, Branson Veterans Task Force and Armed Forces Relief Trust.
