Broadbus Enhances On-Demand Video Platform With New IPTV and Reliability Features

Broadbus Enhances On-Demand Video Platform With New IPTV and Reliability Features

Latest Versions of B-1(TM) Video Server and Stream Commander(R) Software Deliver New Codec Support, Advanced Video Services and Fault Tolerance Improvements

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- IBC Conference -- Broadbus Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of technology solutions for Television On-Demand (TOD(R)), today announced the latest version of its award-winning on-demand video platform. The release extends Broadbus' carrier-class on-demand solution with enhanced support for IPTV applications and new reliability features.

The Broadbus B-1 Video Server and Stream Commander management software have been updated to provide video service providers with new on-demand functionality including support for H.264/MPEG-4, improved security, support for IPTV-based advanced video services such as nDVR and Time-Shifted TV, as well as enhanced fault tolerance and reliability.

"This release builds upon our tremendous success in the video on-demand (VOD) market and supports the rapidly growing demand for IPTV solutions and advanced on-demand video services such as Time-Shifted TV and nDVR," said Tom Kennedy, senior director of marketing at Broadbus. "While we continue to improve the performance, reliability, and scalability of our platform, we're also executing on our vision to deliver on-demand video in a variety of applications across multiple platforms and devices."

Enhanced Support for IPTV and Advanced Video Services

Based on market requirements gathered from its IPTV customers and field trials worldwide, Broadbus has introduced enhanced support for IPTV and advanced video services, including:

-- Advanced Codec Support -- H.264/MPEG-4, RTSP (rfc 2326)
-- IP-based Advanced Video Services -- Network-based Digital Video
Recording via multicast, Time-Shifted TV
-- Content resiliency
-- Enhanced Security and user authentication -- SSHv2, TACACS+, Denial of
service (DOS) prevention

"IPTV is an important technology with a number economic and network efficiencies," said Kennedy. "Broadbus' enhanced support of on-demand services in an IP environment ensures that service providers are able to take advantage of the benefits associated with this switch-based technology. In addition, in an IPTV environment, we expect that emerging on-demand services such as nDVR and Time-Shifted TV will extend beyond the home to provide premium entertainment experiences on next-generation devices, including mobile handsets."

New Fault Tolerance Features

The latest version of the Broadbus solution builds upon the fault-tolerance and resiliency features of the B-1 Video Server by adding support for fault tolerance within the Stream Commander application, further enhancing the overall reliability of the platform.

The Broadbus Stream Commander management application configures, coordinates and monitors networked B-1 video servers via a web-based graphical user interface. The software manages all ingest, storage and streaming activities and maintains an active database of configuration profiles and status, alarm, stream and content statistics. It also manages the propagation of content to and from near-term storage libraries.

Broadbus B-1 Video Server

At the heart of the Broadbus on-demand video platform is solid-state streaming server technology that scales to 80 Gbps of output, the highest density in the industry. The B-1 can ingest hundreds of live and pre-recorded programs simultaneously, enabling advanced video services such as Time-Shifted TV, nDVR, On-Demand Ad Insertion and eventually, full-scale TOD.

The Broadbus B-1 Video Server is the only 100% solid-state, carrier-class solution for the delivery of on-demand video services. The platform's compact, switch-based architecture completely eliminates the use of mechanical hard drives for video streaming and ingest, instead leveraging the intelligent management of massive amounts of random-access memory. The result is unparalleled performance, reliability, scalability for video on-demand and advanced on-demand services at less than one-tenth the footprint and one-eighth the power requirements of traditional systems.

Broadbus will demonstrate the updated solution at the IBC Conference in booth 5.330 September 8-12. For more information visit http://www.ibc.org/.

On July 25th, 2006, Motorola announced its intent to acquire Broadbus. The acquisition is expected to close in Q3 2006.

About Broadbus

Broadbus develops fully scalable, next-generation video on-demand solutions designed to solve streaming scale, space, power consumption and live ingest issues for communications service providers deploying advanced video services such as VOD, IPTV, Time-Shifted TV, Network-Based DVRs (nDVR), On-Demand Ad Insertion and ultimately, full-scale Television On-Demand (TOD). Broadbus offers a migration path to the emerging TOD environment, while fully exploiting existing upgraded broadband networks. The company's revolutionary solid-state server architecture, based on the intelligent configuration and management of massive amounts of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), eliminates the use of mechanical hard drives for video streaming and ingest. The result is unparalleled performance, reliability and scalability for VOD and advanced on-demand services.

Broadbus recently received the highest score of any video server vendor in Broadband Gear Report's Diamond Technology Reviews. The company was also selected Red Herring for inclusion into its annual list of Top 100 Private Companies, named for the second consecutive year to CED Magazine's Broadband 50, awarded Product of the Year by the Massachusetts Network Communication Council and listed as a finalist for Best Innovation in two categories for the first annual On-Demandies(TM) awards hosted by Digital Hollywood.
