The Council, established by President Bush in January 2003 and renewed last year, is charged with promoting and recognizing the contributions that Americans of all ages and backgrounds are making to their communities through volunteer service. An initiative of the USA Freedom Corps, the Council is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Ms. Turner joins a dynamic group of 25 leaders from a variety of fields in the private, public, and non-profit sectors, including business, entertainment, athletics, education, philanthropy and government. Other Council members include NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne, journalist Cokie Roberts, and singer Hilary Duff.
While the backgrounds of the Council members are diverse, they share a commitment to strengthening volunteer service in America. "I am deeply honored to have been appointed by President Bush to the Council," Turner said. "I believe volunteering is one of the best ways we can serve our communities and help our country. I admire the President for recognizing the many millions of Americans who give generously of their time and energies."
Ms. Turner has a long and active history in philanthropy and volunteer work. Recently, her projects include acting as Mistress of Ceremonies at the Pregnancy Resource Council Luncheon, and working with the Boys and Girls Club of America and the Houston Alcohol and Drug Council. Ms. Turner is a strong supporter of President Bush. In March, she sang the National Anthem in the presence of the President at the Republican National Committee's annual Gala fundraiser.
Ms. Turner is also juggling a wide variety of creative projects. She recently starred in "Night of the White Pants," an independent film directed by Texan Amy Talkington and co-starring Tom Wilkinson, Francis Fisher and Selma Blair. She is writing a book titled Single Mothers Throughout History for Thomas Nelson Publishers, is promoting her groundbreaking Christian Yoga video, "Christoga," yoga with Biblical scriptures and is recording a Christian album.
Ms. Turner lives on her longhorn cattle ranch in Texas with her eight- year-old daughter, Juliette Turner-Jones.
