Comcast Foundation Energizes NCLR's Affiliate Program With 3-year Grants to Eight Affiliates for Capacity Building in Local Communities
WASHINGTON, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Comcast Foundation and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, announced that the Comcast Foundation will invest in a new NCLR effort to build the capacity of eight NCLR affiliates around the United States. Each affiliate will receive a three-year grant to support program and advocacy initiatives to strengthen the Latino community.
The Comcast Foundation grantees will be chosen by NCLR through a competitive process from among its Affiliates in the 36 states that Comcast serves. The grants will help NCLR Affiliate partners to build organizational and programmatic capacity in health, education, community development, workforce development, advocacy, and civic engagement.
"This significant grant comes at a strategic moment for NCLR given that we have recently completed our Affiliate Member Services Business Plan," said Janet Murguia, NCLR President and CEO at the Affiliate Forum, a gathering of NCLR Affiliates at the NCLR 2006 Annual Conference. "Affiliates are cornerstones in the progress needed to advance the quality of life for Latinos and improve our nation as a whole. The Comcast Foundation support will help NCLR and our Affiliate partners in our efforts to ensure that the American dream is possible for all Latinos."
Over the next nine months, NCLR will roll out the request process; each Affiliate will receive a grant totaling up to $75,000 over three years to build its capacity to engage in program and policy work on behalf of Latinos.
"We are pleased to lend our support to NCLR's newly expanded Affiliate Member Services program," said David L. Cohen, executive vice president for Comcast and chairman of the Comcast Foundation. "This grant program reflects the importance to us of supporting organizations that contribute to the quality of life in Hispanic American communities that we serve across the nation."
