5 Beach Safety Tips

5 Beach Safety Tips

The lifeguards from Court TV's new series, Beach Patrol: Miami Beach, which airs every Monday in July at 8 & 8:30 p.m., give the top five tips for staying safe this summer. Spending time at the beach during the summer months is one of America's favorite pastimes. While it's easy to relax and let loose while on the beach, it's also important to keep safety in mind. The beach is a great place to relax, but there can also be dangers that people aren't aware of, such as riptides, de-hydration or even theft.

5 TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AT THE BEACH

1. Swim Near a Lifeguard -- the ocean can be a scary an unpredictable
place, so it's important to make sure you are near a lifeguard when in
the water. Lifeguards will keep swimmers aware of rip currents or other
unsafe swimming conditions. If you are out of their view, there's less
of a chance they will be able to help you if a situation arises.

2. Alcohol and water don't mix -- mixing alcohol and swimming can be very
dangerous and can lead to accidents in the water or on the sand. Your
body is already dehydrated from the sun, so adding alcohol into the mix
can be a dangerous combination. Swimming while intoxicated can lead to
accidents, or even worse, drownings. If you're drinking alcohol, make
sure to stay out of the water or if you go in to cool off, let a
lifeguard know you have been drinking so they can keep careful watch
over you.

3. Keep yourself hydrated -- the sun is very powerful at the beach and can
lead to dehydration when exposed to it for long periods of time. Make
sure you bring water with you to the beach. Drinks with a lot of sugar
in them, like soda and juices, can add to dehydration. Instead of
sugary drinks, bring fruit slices like lemons, oranges or limes, to add
to your water to spice it up. Make sure to drink water periodically
throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. It will off-set the
damage dehydration can cause.

4. Always wear sunscreen -- the sun's UV rays are very dangerous and can
lead to early wrinkles, skin cancer and other skin problems. In order
to protect yourself against sun damage, make sure you always wear
sunscreen. Even in overcast weather, the sun is still out and can be
harmful. Re-apply every 30 minutes for maximum protection.

5. Keep your valuables at home -- beaches can get crowded during the
summer, which increases the likelihood of something getting stolen.
People should leave their valuables -- such as jewelry, ipods, and cell
phones -- at home. Don't bring large amounts of money to the beach, and
keep your possessions on your person or in your sight at all times.
