WIPP Applauds House for Opening Cable Competition

WIPP Applauds House for Opening Cable Competition

WASHINGTON, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), the nation's largest bi-partisan women's business group, applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for approving H.R. 5252, the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement Act (COPE) and calls on the Senate to deliver competition of cable services for consumers.

"As representatives of 15.6 million women business owners across the country, we believe this reform will be a boon to women and minority-owned businesses that want to be able to shop among multiple carriers for the best price in Internet and video services. In addition to lowering prices for consumers, competition will give companies the incentive to invest in new technology and update their broadband networks to better serve customers. Upgrading our country's broadband infrastructure will create jobs and help the U.S. keep pace with its global competitors," said WIPP President and Co- founder Barbara Kasoff.

Across the country, cable rate increases have outpaced inflation. But in the few areas with wire-based cable competition, prices have gone down. The COPE Act will promote competition, and lower prices, by making it easier for would-be competitors to challenge cable incumbents.

"We also thank the House for rejecting so-called 'net neutrality' amendments to this bill. WIPP believes that consumer demand, innovation in technology, and competition between providers should drive changes in the telecommunication sector rather than government imposed regulation. We urge the Senate now to quickly pass COPE," stated Kasoff.
