Vertasent and Harmonic Support Open Architecture Switched Digital Video
Demonstrating the convergence of Video on Demand and Switched Digital Broadcast at Cable-Tec Expo 2006
DENVER, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2006 -- Vertasent, a leading developer of advanced on-demand television management systems, and Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT), a leading provider of digital video, broadband optical networking and IP delivery systems, announced support of an open architecture switched digital video architecture. This architecture will be demonstrated at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo this week in the Harmonic booth (#1180).
The demonstration utilizes a widely deployed set-top box and electronic program guide, and two-way communications allow subscribers to determine, through usage, which programs should be made available on each node. With the increasing number of networks and the need for high definition simulcast, switched digital video is an attractive method to reduce the unwatched channels on a node. The Vertasent's Switched Video Manager makes use of the widely deployed Harmonic NSG 8108 and NSG 9116 as well as the newly introduced ultra high-density NSG 9000 edge QAMs to selectively deliver programs on a node by node basis.
The open architecture supported by Vertasent and Harmonic represents an evolutionary approach that shares infrastructure with existing VOD installations. Offering a new service such as switched digital on this robust and well-understood infrastructure reduces costs and operational impact. Operators can apply the knowledge of narrowcast services gained through VOD deployments, rather than learn a new architecture for switched digital. Additionally, sharing resources such as edge QAMs between multiple services allows cable operators to provision based on real-time consumer behavior rather than mathematical models thereby improving efficiency.
"Working with Harmonic has allowed us to address some of the economic issues that have slowed the adoption of Switched Digital Video," said Bruce Bradley, VP, Marketing at Vertasent. "Traditional switched digital video systems require the installation of dedicated or customized edge QAMs. Our work with the highly flexible NSG has enabled a solution allowing switched video to be deployed using excess capacity of the installed base of VOD edge QAMs. Sharing these resources greatly reduces cost to the cable operator."
"We are pleased to be working with Vertasent to offer our customers an additional benefit for their investment in our Narrowcast Services Gateway. Vertasent's evolutionary approach to switched video allows cable operators to maximize the usage of their installed NSGs and offers them the promise of incremental expansion without deploying a whole new narrowcast architecture as either their switched digital or VOD needs increase," said Gil Katz, Director of Cable Solutions and Strategy at Harmonic.
"The Harmonic NSG has performed extremely well in our tests and its design has proven to be very flexible. Cable operators worry that channel changing performance might be impacted by switch digital, but we have been able to work with Harmonic engineers to ensure that this is not the case," continued Bruce Bradley. "Switched digital video is an economical alternative to upgrading a low bandwidth plant."
