Motorola's OCAP(R) Solutions to Be Trialed in Select Cox Communications Markets

Motorola's OCAP(R) Solutions to Be Trialed in Select Cox Communications Markets

DENVER, June 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced that Cox Communications will begin evaluation of Motorola's open cable applications platform (OCAP(R)) middleware solution. The announcement was made at the 2006 SCTE Cable-Tec Expo (Colorado Convention Center, Denver, 21-23 June) where Motorola is exhibiting its OCAP solutions at Stand #176.

An initiative of CableLabs, the OCAP specification enables software developers to craft applications that can run on any cable television system in North America, independent of set-top or television receiver hardware or operating system software choices. Motorola's OCAP solution provides developers with standards-based access to the enhanced functions of the company's widely-deployed portfolio of digital set-tops,

Using the standard OCAP 1.0 and OCAP-DVR specifications, Motorola's solution further allows operators to tap into the robust networking capabilities of the Motorola Follow Me TV platform. This will enable developers to take advantage of features such as linking set-tops and mobile devices and the sharing of tuners and storage across a home network -- right from within their own custom OCAP applications.

"Motorola's set-top platform is a critical piece of Cox's OCAP ecosystem and having their set-top platform ready for evaluation and testing will help us ensure a successful rollout," said John Hildebrand, vice president of video technology engineering for Cox Communications.

"Motorola is committed to bringing emerging, open standards like OCAP throughout our entire hardware portfolio," said Nick Chakalos, Motorola senior director, software product management, connected home solutions. "We are proud to deliver our solution to Cox for evaluation as part of as their OCAP strategy."
