HOLLYWOOD, Calif., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- One of America's premier touring bands, Grand Funk Railroad has teamed with Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing for the August 15 release of an expanded, limited edition Greatest Hits CD/DVD. Recently released on CD, Grand Funk Railroad: Greatest Hits boasts 14 digitally remastered tracks on CD, including nine Top 40 hits, among them two #1 singles: "We're an American Band" and "The Loco-Motion," and the Top 5 hits "Some Kind Of Wonderful" and "Bad Time." The new limited edition package caps Capitol/EMI's extensive Grand Funk Railroad catalog restoration, pairing the CD with a DVD of previously unreleased TV and concert performance clips that the Funk Faithful have long clamored for, plus a never before released promotional film produced during the pivotal 1973 recording sessions for We're An American Band.

Capitol/EMI's extensive catalog restoration campaign for Grand Funk Railroad began in 2002 with the release of the band's 12 classic Capitol albums digitally remastered on CD with bonus tracks. The numbered, limited edition Trunk Of Funk boxed set, also released that year, held four of the band's remastered albums with room for fans to add the other eight discs.

The expanded Grand Funk Railroad: Greatest Hits CD/DVD package includes four previously unreleased classic TV and concert performance film clips and a never-before-released 13-minute promotional film, shot in 1973 in multiple locations around the band's native Michigan. Featuring interviews and performance footage, the film presents a glimpse into the recreational outlets pursued between sessions for the landmark album We're An American Band. While the three-minute tailpiece montage of shots has been excerpted for some broadcasts over the years, the original, full-length film remains a long-lost treasure for Grand Funk fans, a candid snapshot from their rich history. The DVD's concert performance clips include "I'm Your Captain" from the band's 1971 Shea Stadium performance, filmed by the legendary filmmaking team of Albert and David Maysles.

A genre-bending blend of funk, boogie, heavy rock and electrifying live shows led to Grand Funk Railroad's emergence as one of America's most iconic rock bands of the 1970s. In 1968, Mark Farner (lead vocals, guitar), Don Brewer (drums/vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass) first performed as Grand Funk Railroad in their hometown of Flint, Michigan. The band's aggressive touring schedule made them a top choice for concertgoers across the country, and in 1971, Grand Funk Railroad broke a Beatles-held ticket sales record by selling out Shea Stadium in just 72 hours.

Produced by Todd Rundgren, Grand Funk Railroad's 1973 album, We're An American Band, rose to #2 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and was certified Platinum with more than one million units sold. The album's definitive title track became the band's first #1 Pop hit.

Grand Funk Railroad's success continued with the 1974 release of Shinin' On, which spawned the band's second #1 Pop single, "The Loco-Motion." Originally popularized by Little Eva, the song was rearranged by the band to showcase their unique style, and it was heard as rock's answer to dance and disco. Today, "The Loco-Motion," "We're An American Band," "Some Kind of Wonderful" (#3 Pop), and "Bad Time" (#4 Pop) are Classic Rock radio staples. All four tracks are collected on Grand Funk Railroad's Greatest Hits, along with five more Top 40 hits and other fan favorites.

Grand Funk Railroad is performing select dates in the U.S. this summer, with a line-up featuring original members Brewer and Schacher, and adding Bruce Kulick (lead guitar), Max Carl (vocals) and Tim Cashion (keyboards). Fans hoping to catch the locomotive can get more information at the band's official website: http://www.grandfunkrailroad.com/. Since his departure from Grand Funk Railroad, Mark Farner has continued to tour and record as a solo artist. For more information, visit Farner's official website: http://www.markfarner.com/.
