Americans Are One Step Closer to Saving Millions of Dollars a Year on Cable Television Service, According to American Homeowners Grassroots Alliance

WASHINGTON, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans are one step closer to saving millions of dollars a year on cable television service, following bi- partisan support in the Senate Commerce Committee yesterday.

"Recent case studies have shown that allowing new competitors to compete with cable TV monopolies on a national basis will save a typical video services subscriber approximately $240 a year," said Bruce Hahn, president and CEO of American Homeowners Grassroots Alliance. This is a very, very significant savings for most homeowners and other consumers. "The new law will provide the first step for consumers towards many other long-term benefits in addition to video services."

Hahn pointed out that the influence of the legislation would extend far beyond just competition in TV services. The same lines that bring video services to the home can also bring high-speed Internet services, voice communications, enhanced telecommuting services, home security services, health care monitoring and emergency response, distance learning and other educational initiatives.

On behalf of the nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that serves the nation's 75 million homeowners, Hahn thanked Senators Stevens and Inouye for their leadership in bringing this important reform to the top of their priority list. He also thanked all of the members of the Senate Commerce Committee who voted in favor of S. 2686. The committee passed the legislation for full floor consideration by a vote of 15-7.

"There is no component of any pending legislation in this Congress that will so quickly bring such substantial savings to homeowners. I urge the U.S. Senate to act swiftly on this legislation -- bring it to the floor for a vote now," continued Hahn. "This legislation has received broad and overwhelming bi-partisan support in the U.S. House and now in the Senate. Let's finish the job and put those savings in consumers' pockets now!"
