THINKFilm Acquires Worldwide Rights to F**K
NEW YORK, March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- THINKFilm has acquired all worldwide rights to F**K, an amusing and provocative documentary by Steve Anderson about everyone's favorite four-letter word. The film, which was recently screened to great acclaim at SXSW, features interviews with (in alphabetical order): Pat Boone, Drew Carey, Billy Connolly, Sam Donaldson, Janeane Garofolo, Ice-T, Ron Jeremy, Bill Maher, Michael Medved, Alanis Morrisette, Kevin Smith and the late Hunter S. Thompson, among others. The deal was announced by the company's president and CEO Jeff Sackman and theatrical division head Mark Urman, who plan to release the film in exclusive engagements in 2006. Showtime will partner with THINK and will broadcast the film next year.
A definitive look at the infamous expletive, F**K explores how this oft-used word, still widely seen as obscene, somehow permeates every aspect of our culture -- from Hollywood, to the schoolyard, to the Senate floor in Washington D.C., where it is at the very center of the ongoing debate on Free Speech. F**K examines the word's impact through various interviews, film and television clips, and original animation by Oscar-nominee Bill Plympton. Scholars and linguists examine its long and colorful history; comedians, actors, and writers who have charted and popularized the word defend their Constitutional right to use it. Even people who do "it" for a living are interviewed, all in an effort to discover what it is about this one syllable that both unties and polarizes people.
"Steve has made a wonderfully clever, informative, and energetic film and we are not only excited to be releasing it," says Urman, "we are thrilled to be among the few companies who CAN! Everything about the way we advertise, publicize and even discuss this film requires us to be thoughtful, original, and fresh, and for an independent distributor, there is no greater gift."
Director Anderson says that the film is a perfect fit for THINK. "I'm thrilled to be in business with a company that welcomes challenging material. While others seem to want to play it safe, THINK continues to release films that don't fit a traditional mold. This word is at the very center of the ongoing debate over Free Speech in our country and from the moment I began this project, I knew we had to find a distributor who would embrace the ideas and conflicts that this film explores."
Steven G. Kaplan, Rainstorm's president states, "Our creative team is thrilled to partner with Think and Showtime in releasing our film. They possess the right mix of ingenuity, creativity and guts to bring this project to the worldwide film going audience."
F**K was directed and produced by Anderson through his Mudflap Films banner, executive produced by Steven G. Kaplan, Gregg L. Daniel, Bruce Leiserowitz, Jory Weitz and Richard Ardi, with editing by Jayne Rodericks, cinematography by Andre Fontanelle, original music by Carvin Knowles and animation by Bill Plympton.
The deal for the theatrical distribution was negotiated by Daniel Katz, THINKFilm's VP of Acquisitions, and Shaun Redick of ICM and Steve Kaplan of Rainstorm Entertainment on behalf of the filmmakers. The deal for the broadcast rights was negotiated by Randy Manis, THINKFilm's SVP of Acquisitions and Business Affairs, and Showtime's VP of Acquisitions, Larry Greenberg.
