Pre-Mother's Day Event Gives Pregnant Pause to Problem Affecting Over 700,000 Moms-to-Be

Pre-Mother's Day Event Gives Pregnant Pause to Problem Affecting Over 700,000 Moms-to-Be

COLUMBIA, Md., March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Better BedRest, Inc. and partner Borders Books & Music will host the second "Read and Rest" Reading and Book Signing Benefit, with author Mallika Chopra, on Sunday, May 7 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. at Borders Books & Music (6151 Columbia Crossing Circle) to promote awareness of pregnancy bed rest as a problem affecting nearly three-quarters of a million American expectant mothers.

"The community needs organizations like Better BedRest. It's essential to support women all over the world who experience complications during pregnancy," said Chopra, author of "100 Promises to My Baby," partner in Chopra Media, and daughter of world-renowned self-help guru, Deepak Chopra. "This is a promise we should make to these women for the sake of their beautiful unborn babies. These babies are the future global citizens who have the power to change the world."

Over 700,000 women in the U.S. are placed on bed rest annually. Howard County, Md.-based Better BedRest, Inc., founded in 1993, is an advocacy, public awareness and volunteer-driven non-profit whose purpose is to provide support, resources, and referrals to women who are prescribed bed rest by their physicians or midwives. The organization shines a light on a growing prenatal issue that impacts one in five pregnant women in the U.S.

"As we approach another Mother's Day, it's unfortunate that not all moms- to-be are healthy and in the public eye. Pregnancy bed rest is a common but invisible issue in communities across the country and around the globe," remarked Joanie Reisfeld, Better BedRest Founder and President. "If we can help these women de-stress by listening to their concerns and offering them practical information that improves the quality of time spent off their feet, we feel we're ultimately contributing to healthy mothers and healthy babies."

Bed rest is prescribed for complications related to, among others, pre- term labor, cervical problems, vaginal spotting, abdominal surgery, placenta previa, and multiple birth gestation. Bed rest can force otherwise independent women into varying states of dependency, triggering feelings of isolation and guilt, and impacting relationship dynamics between spouses.

Proceeds will be devoted to expanding the number of individual Better BedRest grants to women in financial distress. Awardees can use grants toward unpaid bills, childcare, or other critical needs arising often during strict bed rest when women must stop working or caring full-time for their children.

Baltimore's WJZ-TV news anchor Denise Koch will open the event. Better BedRest, Inc. and Borders are joined by sponsors Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine; The Columbia Foundation; Patuxent Publishing; American Radiology Services; Contemporary Health for Women; Matria HealthCare; March of Dimes; Drs. Esposito, Mayer, Hogan & Associates, P.A.; Shady Grove Fertility Reproductive Science Center; Tai Sophia Institute; Columbia Creative Services; Hillmuth Automotive; Saphia Lifestyle Beverages; and James Ferry Photography. The event is made possible in part by a grant from The Horizon Foundation, and is free and open to the public.
