Satisfaction Magazine Recruits Experts to Name the Best Songs in 10 Categories From Rock's Glory Years
CHICAGO, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Everyone's got their list of all-time favorite rock 'n roll songs. But what about an expert opinion?
Satisfaction Magazine's ( http://www.satisfactionmag.com/ ) March-April issue turns back the clock to the glory years of rock 'n roll -- 1964 to 1980 -- and asks two generations of rock music writers and editors to name the best songs in 10 categories. The lists range from the Best Air Guitar Songs to the best In the Mood, Dance and Rock Anthems. The tunes they selected include picks from the British Invasion, the San Francisco Sound and Southern rock, much of Motown and even some funk and reggae.
On their collective playlist, the Beatles edge Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye and Bob Dylan for most-mentioned artist. The Allman Brothers and Aretha Franklin and, yes, Michael Jackson, among others, all notch multiple mentions. But Queen and The King and bands from Led Zeppelin to Zapp also show up.
Mark J. Miller, Satisfaction's Editorial Director and Publisher, expects the lists to generate disagreement among the magazine's readers -- and that's fine with him. "We're inviting readers to send us their own top ten lists, and we plan to post them all at http://www.satisfactionmag.com/boomertunes . That's going to be half the fun with this piece." Readers are encouraged to e-mail their lists to Miller at editor@satisfactionmag.com . And for readers who do like the reviewers' selections, most of the tunes are available for download on http://www.satisfactionmag.com/boomertunes via a link to the iTunes Music Store.
Satisfaction's review committee of nationally-known rock music writers includes author and Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony De Curtis; Alan Light, former editor of "Spin," "Vibe" and "Tracks" magazines, and a former senior writer at Rolling Stone; Abe Peck, Sills Professor at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University and former music news editor of "Rolling Stone; Daney Smith, former editor-in-chief of "Vibe"; and Tom Vickers, a 30-year veteran of the music industry and music writer.
