New Music Based on Stock Market Patterns: 'Playing the Market'

MINNEAPOLIS, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Oscillation Productions LLC announces the release of "Playing the Market," the debut audio recording by Emerald Suspension. "Playing the Market" features experimental music based on patterns found in the stock market and economic data. The recording is being distributed by CD Baby.

What is the sound of a market crash? Decidedly experimental, the compositions on "Playing the Market" are structured based on source data such as stock returns, trading volume, interest rates, inflation, unemployment, government debt, consumer confidence, and related financial algorithms. The resulting audio is "primarily conceptual, but can be surprisingly musical in many cases," according to producer Troy Curtis. The particular tracks included on "Playing the Market" range from minimalist algorithmic music to raw industrial audio arrangements and have been described by Vital Weekly reviewer Frans de Waard as "... a fine balance between ... orchestral pieces, a bit of sound collage and electro-acoustic music, all powered by this strange concept of whatever facts and figures the stock market has brought us. A most curious mixture."

Some examples of audio compositions on "Playing the Market" include the following:

-- "Industrial Century" is an orchestral composition based on 100 years of
daily stock market data. Changes in pitch follow the direction of
returns for the U.S. stock market over the course of the 20th century,
while the dynamics of the various parts are appropriately determined by
market trading "volume."
-- "Irrational Exuberance / Great Depression" is a composition for piano
with notes and expression changes determined by the historical patterns
of the Consumer Confidence Index.
-- "National Debt" is an audio representation of the U.S. national debt as
experienced over more than 200 years. Historical debt changes result in
a light "rain chime" effect at the beginning of the piece that progress
to the level of a severe storm by the end.
-- "Long Bond" is a string solo based on the pattern of interest rates as
represented by the historical yields of 30-year Treasury bonds.
-- "Stock Options" is an experimental audio composition derived from
calculations based on the Black-Scholes option pricing model.
-- "The Misery Index" is an experimental recording based on the historical
patterns of inflation and unemployment, arranged for an appropriately
"dismal" tone.
-- "Fibonacci's Random Walk" is algorithmic music based on the Fibonacci
number series used as an investment indicator by some technical
traders.
