LULAC Audio Press Briefing: What Franchise Reform Means for the Hispanic Population in America

LULAC Audio Press Briefing: What Franchise Reform Means for the Hispanic Population in America

Following the 9th Annual LULAC National Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., President Hector Flores will join national leaders from the Hispanic-American community to discuss the need for cable choice.

In the absence of competition, cable TV prices are increasing at three times the rate of inflation. Obsolete government regulations all but prevent new competitors from entering the market. Consumer groups nationwide are calling upon Congress to pass legislation this year to reform these regulations to encourage competition and provide consumers with lower prices, more innovation and better customer service.

In addition to lower prices and better service for all consumers, competition would boost broadband deployment and access throughout Hispanic, minority and low-income communities, which are traditionally left underserved by cable providers. These reforms would open doors to Hispanic-American consumers and programmers, encouraging new programming that could address the under-representation of Hispanic-Americans in mainstream broadcasting.
