BUFFALO GROVE, Ill., March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the Construction Writers Association will gather in Washington, D.C., May 3-5, 2006, for the association's annual meeting and conference, "Reach for the Stars." Attendees will enjoy a tour to the construction site of the new Air Force Memorial, the CWA Awards dinner, education sessions designed to enhance members' skills, and annual meeting sessions covering construction-related topics, including Construction in Space.
The tour to the new Air Force Memorial construction site is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, May 3. The memorial is located on a three-acre site at the Naval Annex overlooking the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. The main feature of the memorial, designed by Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners, is three stainless steel, reinforced concrete spires that will extend as much as 270 ft. in the air when completed. In addition, there will be inscription walls, an open chamber of contemplation, a parade walk with honor guard statue, a stone seating area and more. The work is being done by Centex Construction, which will host the tour.
Following the tour, CWA's opening get-together will be an informal pizza party hosted at the offices of DMJM Design, also in Arlington.
Thursday morning, May 4, will feature a series of educational sessions under the general title "fundamentals of construction writing" that are designed to develop the skills of construction writers. A panel discussion will cover how public relations people can work best with publications; a presentation by the American Society of Civil Engineers will explain how ASCE does the research for its Infrastructure Report and show ways construction writers can use the information; and a "how to get organized" presentation will focus on achieving the important while responding to the immediate.
Thursday evening's Awards Dinner, always a highlight of CWA meetings, will honor winners of the CWA Journalism Awards, the CWA Photography Awards, and the CWA Silver Hard Hat Awards.
CWA's annual meeting is scheduled for Friday morning, May 5. Sessions will include: "The 50th Anniversary of the Interstate," including information on the related media campaign, to be presented by Matt Jeanneret of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association; "Construction in Space," to be presented by John Elbon, Boeing Company's program manager for the International Space Station; and "Infrastructure for Aging (Accommodating Those Baby Boomers Again!)," focusing on public and commercial design, to be presented by Paul Morris of Parsons Brinkerhoff.
