CNN Legal Commentator Avery Friedman to Teach Broadcast Media Course at Cuyahoga Community College This Spring
CLEVELAND, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Avery Friedman, veteran lecturer at 24 law schools coast-to-coast and legal commentator for CNN every weekend, will teach Broadcast Journalism, at the Metro campus of Cuyahoga Community College starting Thursday, March 23 at 6 p.m. The course will focus on the legal perspectives in the media and is one of many new classes offered through the new Journalism and Mass Communication sequence that Tri-C launched last fall.
With nearly three million viewers watching the legal segment weekly on CNN, Friedman is widely recognized for his expertise and broadcast experience. In addition, he is chief counsel for the Fair Housing Council of Northeast Ohio and served as special counsel for the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his advocacy of civil rights, including the United States Fair Housing Achievement Award, the Ohio Humanitarian Award from the governor, The Freedom Award with the NAACP and the Civil Rights Champion Award by the Southern Christian Leadership Council.
"We look forward to hosting Avery Friedman at Tri-C. What a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and work with a Clevelander who is a CNN commentator," said Tri-C Program Manager of Journalism and Mass Communication Michelle McCoy.
"For me, it's a great merger of sharing constitutional law with offering broadcast commentary, a functional part of educating the future broadcasters of American television," said Friedman.
The eight-week class will be held on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9:40 p.m. beginning March 23. Students can expect to work on projects with well-known media personalities in the Cleveland media market. Weekly discussions will involve a variety of topical issues, including journalists' access to Guantanamo and defamation claims against networks brought by today's Hollywood stars.
The course is open to anyone, however those specifically interested in broadcast journalism and media law would benefit. To learn more, or to register for the three-hour credit class, contact Michelle McCoy at (216) 987- 4584 or via e-mail at michelle.mccoy@tri-c.edu.
