Top Culinary Schools and Hospitality Industry Saluted at Black Tie Gala

NEW YORK, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Marriott Marquis will serve as the host for the BCA's 13th Annual Cultural Awareness Salute on Saturday, February 25th, 2006. This black-tie gala, hosted by Fox 5 News Anchorperson Lyn Brown, celebrates contributions made by people of color in the culinary and hospitality industry, as well as showcasing students from some of the top culinary schools in the country.

Entitled "Shaping the Future", the Cultural Awareness Salute provides a glimpse of the future with a multi-course meal with wine pairing prepared by students from Johnson & Wales, South Bronx & Brooklyn Job Corps Academy, Monroe College, Institute of Culinary Education (ICE), Hudson County Community College, Baltimore International College, Food Change High School Culinary Arts Program, Art Institute, Culinary Academy, Hudson County Community College, and Food Service Training Academy. "This is the one time of year when students come together in the same kitchen and cook in a non-competitive environment," says Alex Askew, President of BCA. "Guests will be amazed by the culinary expertise."

Every year, the BCA recognizes persons of color who have made great contributions to the hospitality industry. This year's honorees include: Roberto Santibanez, Culinary Director of Rosa Mexicano Restaurants and Saddruddin Abdullah Master Pastry Chef at Johnson & Wales University, The Heritage Award will be presented to Lowell Hawthorne, President of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery, and the Lifetime Award will be presented to Rochelle Brown-Johnson, Co-Owner Powerhouse Productions and consultant to the Emerill Show on the Food Network.

Founded in 1993, the BCA (Black Culinarian Alliance) is a nationwide non-profit, educational and networking organization of hospitality and food service professionals. Incorporated as a 501(c) (3) in 1998, the mission of the BCA is to create exposure and provide educational and professional opportunities for culinary and hospitality professionals of color.
