4 Out of 5 Americans Unaware That Home Fires are the Greatest and Most Common Disaster Threat
Eighty percent of Americans do not know that home fires are the most common disaster in the United States. Moreover, half of families with children are using high-risk methods to heat their homes this winter.
Those are some of the findings of a poll just released by the American Red Cross, whose local chapters helped families affected by nearly 67-thousand house and apartment fires last year -- 92 percent of all Red Cross disaster responses. However, two-thirds of those surveyed cited floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and mudslides as greater threats to their family than home fires.

With the Winter Olympics now underway in Torino, Italy, a large majority of U-S adults surveyed prior to their start said they are poised to watch a least some of the television coverage. When asked what they are most interested in watching, skating and skiing events, in general, tend to be the most popular among those planning to watch the winter games. Specifically, figure skating, alpine/downhill skiing, ice hockey, and bobsledding are the events most likely to draw viewers to their televisions.

Men Get Valentine's Bad Rap
With most men saying they finish their Valentine's Day planning and shopping before February 14th, men stand ready to set the record straight on their bad rap for procrastination surrounding Valentine's romance. In fact, 75 percent of the men surveyed by the National Confectioners Association say they plan ahead, even if they don't make the final purchases until the last few days.

Vacations Have Health Benefits
Finding time to relax shouldn't be an option for men. Long hours and high stress raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease. This prompted researchers to look at whether vacations really are good for your health, the Harvard Men's Health Watch reports. In one study, men who vacationed the most were 29 percent less likely to be diagnosed with heart disease and 17 percent less likely to die over the nine-year study period than those who didn't vacation regularly. The newsletter says while Dutch researchers identified a group of men with so-called leisure sickness, where they develop psychosomatic symptoms away from work, this condition is rare.
