BBC World Service Awards $3.6M Contract for WEGENER iPump Solution

DULUTH, Ga., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wegener(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:WGNR), a leading provider of television, audio and data distribution networks worldwide, today announced the British Broadcasting Corporation purchased a complete iPump(R) System Solution for their international radio distribution network. The system will allow the BBC to distribute audio to over 900 partners globally through advanced digital file store-forward technology, as well as traditional linear broadcasting.

BBC World Service provides international news, analysis and information in English and 32 other languages to 149 million regular listeners. "WEGENER's iPump Solution meets our requirement for a mature, reliable system to provide the complex network control options needed to manage our dynamic worldwide network," stated Nigel Fry, Head of Transmission and Distribution BBC World Service. "Their Compel(R) Network Control and MediaPlan(R) Media Management Systems provide an advanced receiver control system with the functionality World Service needs to deliver its content to partner stations around the world. With WEGENER's control system we have the ability to expand our store- forward network and seamlessly launch video services over the next five years."

"We are very proud to have won the contract for the BBC network," stated Robert Placek, CEO and Chairman of Wegener Corporation. "Their network has distributed radio programming to millions of listeners throughout the world for over 70 years and we are thrilled to supply a tailored iPump solution to distribute their highly-valued, global, media content."

The contract includes WEGENER's iPump 6420 Radio Media Server, Unity(R) 4600 Media Receivers, Compel Network Control System and MediaPlan Media Management System. Included in the order are products from Kencast. WEGENER's iPump 6420 Radio Media Server is specifically designed for regionalization of radio broadcasting -- providing WEGENER's third generation of audio receiver to integrate file-based program distribution with live programming and seamlessly blending audio outputs. Shipments will begin in WEGENER's third quarter of fiscal year 2006 and will continue through fiscal 2007.

WEGENER's solution offers the bandwidth efficiencies and low latency of classic DVB transmissions, while supporting the delivery of audio over IP for applications such as the new digital radio formats of US IBOC HD Digital Radio and the emerging international standard of Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), that delivers digital radio services in the traditional AM spectrums. In addition, in real time the iPump 6420 generates open-standard MPEG-2 files from DVB transport audio streams.
