3Dlabs Wildcat Realizm Selected for Sun XVR-2500 Graphics Accelerator

Wildcat Realizm Graphics Technology Powers High-End Sun Ultra45Workstation Product Line

MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- 3Dlabs(R) Inc., Ltd., a leading innovator in professional visual processing, today announced that its Wildcat(R) Realizm(TM) graphics technology has been chosen by Sun Microsystems, Inc. to provide the foundation for the newly announced Sun(R) XVR-2500 graphics accelerator. The new Sun XVR-2500 card is available in high-end Sun Ultra45 workstations. Powered by Wildcat Realizm graphics technology, Sun XVR-2500 graphics deliver high levels of image quality and real-time visualization capabilities for a wide-range of professional applications. 3Dlabs is a wholly owned subsidiary of Creative Technology Ltd. (NASDAQ:CREAF).

"3Dlabs Wildcat Realizm graphics technology delivers precision and speed at an extraordinary price," said Shahin Khan, vice president of high performance technical computing at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "The Sun XVR-2500's optimized architecture and advanced features are a key part of Sun's strategy to offer unsurpassed productivity, reduced cost of ownership, and superior value to the EDA, MCAD and Government markets."

3Dlabs Wildcat Realizm architecture was tailored to meet Sun's specifications and requirements for the XVR-2500. The XVR-2500 offers high quality, real-time visualization for mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD), mechanical computer-aided engineering (MCAE), geographic information systems (GIS) and healthcare applications. With double the memory of its predecessor, the Sun XVR-2500 supports 64-bit hardware accumulation buffers to accelerate depth-of-field, motion blur, shadows and multi-pass rendering algorithms, complete OpenGL acceleration, 256 MB of onboard memory and genlock support. Wildcat Realizm graphics technology enables the new Sun XVR-2500 graphics accelerator to achieve up to twice the geometry performance and up to 2.5 times the texture mapping performance of the previous generation graphics accelerator. Sun engineers have worked closely with 3Dlabs to fine tune interfaces and drivers to maximize performance with the Sun Solaris V10(R) Operating Environment.

"In the competitive workstation industry, Sun has numerous choices in graphics and they continue to choose 3Dlabs technology because of our exceptional performance, outstanding quality and thorough understanding of the professional graphics market," said Jerry Peterson, executive vice president and general manager of 3Dlabs. "We are delighted to further extend our collaboration with Sun to help them deliver this high-caliber graphics solution."
