Mom Did Not Want Baby Born on Super Bowl Sunday and Miss the Game
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Nine.com an offshore entertainment gaming company, today announced that Pittsburgh Steelers fan Carrie Welling was named as its first weekly "Gambler of the Week" which honors those people who did something unusual, risky, heroic or foolish during the previous week. Ms. Carrie Welling of New Kensington, Pa. certainly meets that criteria.
A pregnant Welling and major Pittsburgh Steelers fan did not let the birth of her baby get in the way of the Super Bowl celebrations. "As soon as he told me my due date would possibly be Super Bowl Sunday, I said, 'No, that's not possible. That's the weekend of the Super Bowl, that's not going to work,'" said Ms. Welling, the expectant mother. She then convinced her doctor to induce her childbirth early so she could be home in time to watch the Super Bowl with all of her friends.
Welling recalls how she didn't want to take the chance that she'd be in the hospital for Super Bowl Sunday. "We had all of our tests done last month to make sure the baby was fully developed," said Welling. "There were no problems. He checked me out last week and said, 'Yeah, everything's good to go. The baby's ready.' He gave me a choice, Wednesday or Friday, and I said, 'Friday's no good.'" So, the doctor scheduled the delivery for early Wednesday morning. "We planned to be induced at 4:30," said Welling. "At 12:30 I woke up not feeling so great. By 2:30, I knew we weren't going to make it until 4:30." Welling said they made it to Magee Hospital with minutes to spare. "She pretty much pulled a Troy Polamalu," said husband Anthony Welling, referring to the Pittsburgh Steelers star. "We had a game plan laid out, and she came in, she took charge of it and boom, away she went with it." Alexandria Joella came so fast that there was no time for an epidural. "And trust me -- after going through it with the no medication -- if this is the one good luck charm they need to push them through to the win, it's worth taking one for the team," said Carrie Welling. As for the newborn's middle name, Joella, it can be broken down into three Steelers parts: "Joe" for Joey Porter, "El" for Antwaan Randal El and "A" for Allan Faneca.
"We have heard of fanatical fans before," says Robert Evans a Nine.com executive, "but Ms. Welling is clearly one of the most dedicated we have heard about. We chose Ms Welling as our first 'Gambler of the Week' due to that risky, maybe crazy, decision to induce birth a few days early so that she could watch the game," says Evans "and not to mention she did it without medication which could have warranted a 'Gambler of the Week' award on its own merit ... but when it came down to making our final choice, because of the Steelers' Super Bowl victory, we felt it was totally appropriate to honor her." Ms Welling will receive various Nine.com merchandise and gift certificates to use on their site.
